Lighthouse for the Blind & Low Vision Assistive Technology Specialists provide technology services to our veterans who are blind or have low vision. These services are designed to help visually impaired veterans regain independence in the home and in the community, enhancing their quality of life.

The Lighthouse for the Blind & Low Vision employs staff who are certified with the ACVREP CATIS certification and oversee technology services. Upon completion of training, veterans can independently use technology such as mobile phones, computers, tablet devices and low vision aids to communicate with family and friends, schedule appointments, manage finances and pursue their hobbies and other interests, thereby increasing their feelings of satisfaction, independence and self-sufficiency.

Eligibility

Who Qualifies for Veterans Services?

Our Veterans Services program is available to veterans who:

  • Are veterans of the United States Armed Forces
  • Have a diagnosed visual impairment (blind or low vision)
  • Are residents of Hillsborough, Polk, or Hardee counties
  • Can benefit from assistive technology services
  • Are motivated to learn and use technology
  • Have a desire to increase independence and quality of life

Service Requirements:

  • Commitment to participate in technology training
  • Willingness to practice and apply learned skills
  • Basic cognitive and physical abilities for technology use
  • Support system for ongoing assistance if needed
  • Access to technology equipment (provided or personal)
